What are MEMS loudspeakers?
MEMS in general
MEMS is the abbreviation of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems. This is the technology of microscopic devices, particularly those with moving parts. Thus, MEMS have both mechanic and electronic components. MEMS are usually made up of microsensors, microactuators, microelectronics and/or microstructures. Both the electronic circuits as well as the mechanical devices are manufactured in a silicon chip, similar to the process used for integrated circuits. MEMS can enhance many different fields of technology, for example, loudspeakers.
MEMS loudspeakers produce sound differently than electrodynamic or balanced armature speaker systems. A number of cantilevers built from piezoelectric material move when exposed to electricity, thus pushing a piston which, in turn, moves a membrane that produces the soundwaves.
